Thunderstorms didn’t slow this group down.  With the
threat of Hurricane Dean barreling towards the Gulf Coast,
Director of Judges Mike West and his beautiful wife Lucy
boarded their plane and braved the predicted bad weather.
Mike is a born teacher. He was helpful and informative.  Lucy is
an encourager of the first degree.  Club members and guests
had a wonderful time visiting with this icon couple.  Lucy and
Mike even fed and petted Stingrays at Kemah Boardwalk by
the Gulf of Mexico proving they are fun loving and great
sports.  Yep, those Stingrays were alive, big, and formidable.
There were some screams. I won’t tell you who screamed.  I will
just let you guess.  Darn, we don’t have a photo for this one!
Prayer went down big time for the weather and the prayers
were answered.  August 15th, 16th, 17th & 18th were positively
miserable with stormy weather.  At 8:00 PM on August 17th
lights lit the trial field brightly with no rain in the Dayton High
School outdoor baseball stadium!  7 BH dogs were entered, 6
of whom were club members.  With the exception of Joe &
Victoria Tackett, this was a “first time ever” Schutzhund Trial
entry for our club members.  We thank our knowledgeable and
dedicated Training Director, Joe Tackett, for all his hard work
and sacrifice helping our club members achieve their goals.
Judge Mike West said, “Most handlers fail their first trial.”
Congratulations are in order to our club members and
their traffic safe companion dogs:

We have some HOT club members!

Another first timer was Cindy Claybaugh from Amarillo,
Texas, with her gorgeous solid black Hessy Top-Pas. Our club
members gave her a warm welcome and lots of support. Cindy
was beaming ear to ear when she and Hessy came off the field
in victory with her BH!
The traffic test of the BH was challenging and fun amongst
the traffic, honking horns, slammed doors, joggers, and bell
ringing bicyclists. Our club athletes Danny Yakin, Dr. Jud &
Patty Henderson, and Ashley Skinner were ready to help.
Ashley’s gorgeous black Maverick was the neutral dog in the
test for dog aggressiveness.  (Ashley is one of our junior
handlers who is proving to be quite accomplished.)  The
fabulous coaches of Dayton High School made up the loud and
rowdy BH temperament test group. Boy, were they ever loud
and big!  It was quite a temperament test indeed!
Anneshia Keller celebrated with tears as Terry Hackathorn
and Ken Ellis’  beautiful Prada accomplished her BH with Joe
Tackett as Trainer and Handler.  Prada is “Nitro’s” (aka V
Xanto von Stevenhaus SchH 3 Kk1 Lifetime) first progeny to
receive a title.  Anneshia Keller is Nitro’s owner and the
breeder of  Prada.
It was still dark at 6:00 AM on August 18 at our tracking
fields.  Then our worst fear happened.  A heavy thunderstorm
rolled in pouring buckets with flashing lightening across the
sky. But once again prayer worked. The thunderstorm was
short lived and the tracking began.  Our guest Melanie Cobb
held the sack for the always nerve wracking draw for tracks.
Steve Cobb and Cosmo were high tracking with 95 points!  Joe
Tackett and Axel followed behind him with a 93 in TR 1.
Protection was pretty awesome.  Strong dogs make for a great
event.  All 3 of our Schutzhund entries brought quality dogs
with strong, hard drives. Chris Webber from The Seagoville
Working Dog Club drove down from Dallas to be our helper.
Chris demonstrated expertise and fairness for each and every
dog.

The Noble Dog of the Year Award was presented to Jerry
Stewart’s Call.  Jerry is the head coach of Dayton High School.
In fact, Jerry was coach of the year for our region.  The Noble
Dog of the Year award is presented to the German Shepherd
Dog who is the greatest public ambassador for the breed and
the sport. Call achieved this award because of his striking
beauty, correct structure and impeccable working
temperament. Call is the son of  V2 South Central Vice Sieger
E.T. von Sendling SchH 3 Kkl 1 a normal (V 2006 NASS). Look
for ET at this year’s NASS Sieger Show.  Call makes regular
public appearances at The Dayton High School demonstrating
the total GSD.  Call even plays soccer with the students. Now
that is called Temperament with a capital "T." Call also has a
bank account of doggie bones at Wells Fargo Bank.  When
Jerry’s wife Linda takes Call to the bank with her, a doggie
bone is always withdrawn by the drive by teller.  The bank
tellers know Ambassador Call by name. Call never met a
stranger. Jerry and Call are true ambassadors promoting the
German Shepherd Dog and Schutzhund as a sport and breed
criteria.
No trial is complete without great food.  We had fabulous
Texas barbecue ribs, brisket, and chicken along with all the
fixings. Wish you had been there. Anyone who missed this
barbecue missed the food and fellowship event of the year.
Our Judge’s Barbecue was held between tracking and
obedience and protection on August 18th at Mercy Acres
Ranch and Kennels, Joe & Victoria Tackett’s home in Dayton.
Speaking of food, I think we all gained a few pounds over
trial weekend. Our wonderful trial secretary, Bambi, had the
fringe benefit of picking the restaurants for entertaining Mike
and Lucy.  Wow, did she ever pick some yummy ones. We ate
stuffed deep fried avocados*  along with enchiladas, lasagna,
steak, all you can eat crab legs and much more.  We ate until
we were about to burst.  We fellowshipped and laughed a lot.
Everyone was invited of course.
Where do we start with our thank yous?  Mike and Lucy
are like family now and deeply appreciated by everyone in our
club. Our club members are the greatest and always ready to
support and help.  A club is people.  People make the club sad
or bright and productive.  We are fortunate to have wonderful
folks.  Our guest entries, Steve and Melanie Cobb, Scott and
Cindy Claybaugh, and Linda Booker were super sports and we
count them as new and valued friends. Chris Webber let us
borrow his years of experience and was a superb helper. Our
own James Whitman was our GSDCA-WDA Certified Helper
backup. Sherry Dupuy and her girls were a great obedience
group organized by Patty Henderson.  Jerry Stewart and the
coaches of Dayton High School helped in too many ways to
mention. Our great trophies were donated by Jerry Stewart.
Bambi Whitman was trial secretary/trial chairman extraordinary.
We want to put her on contract for the job for years to come!
James & Bambi built on Terry Hackathorn’s previous hard work
on our trial catalog to produce a color Summer Trial Catalog
that was no less than first class.
Dr. Jud & Patty Henderson’s  Otto was ready for his BH,
but sadly had an accident that kept him out of the competition.
However, Otto’s injury did not keep Patty and Jud from helping
in many sundry ways.  They loaded up their bicycle and put on
their jogging shoes not only to help in the trial but prior to the
trial in club training sessions. Thanks Patty and Jud! You guys
are real troopers!
We thank Larry Vinzant and Kathleen Kimberlin for their
financial donations to the club. Larry is not even a member, but
a good friend.  Thanks guys!
Dr. Jud & Patty Henderson, Anneshia Keller, James &
Bambi Whitman, Kathleen Kimberlin, and Joe & Victoria Tackett
stepped up to the plate literally and helped pay for meals. The
Hendersons and the Tacketts also helped support the club with
catalog advertisements.
Dayton, Texas is just barely Northeast of Houston. In the
Houston area the heat and humidity are too oppressive to
even think about a trial in the summer– unless you have Jerry
Stewart for a club member that is.  We thank Jerry for the
outstanding facilities of Dayton High School allowing us to have
a night trial to beat the scorching heat.  Dayton High School
has tracking, lighted athletic fields, restrooms, concessions, etc.
We thank our many guests who visited.  Dr. Luke
Chachere, DVM, of  Dayton came to see his clients perform.
We were glad to see Dr. Dena McGowan, DVM with her club
members present.  Rod Dean represented our neighbor
Magnolia group. We had a great time with great people.
Our goal is to have a club that is genuinely warm and
friendly extending hospitality to our guests from all clubs.  We
want to present a safe and fair environment that is equitable to
all.  Our sport is difficult and demanding. We need to reach a
hand out to all of our peers.  If we walk forth hand in hand
helping one another reach goals our sport will grow.  When our
sport grows -- correct structure, temperament and orthopedic
soundness will be positively affected.  We will all share a part in
improving our beloved breed, The German Shepherd Dog.
This is a worthy goal, don’t you think?
Hope to see you guys at our January 12-13 Trial with
GSDCA-WDA Judge Doug Alexander.  Be there!  Y’all welcome!

Victoria Tackett, Secretary
The Good Shepherd Schutzhund Club

*When I asked my husband, Joe, to proof read my article he
said, “Victoria, I don’t think many people will come to our trials if
they think they will be eating stuffed deep fried anacondas (big
snakes).”  When the computer spell checked my article it noted
that I had misspelled avocados. It gave me a list of choices to
click. I must have accidentally clicked on anacondas instead of
avocados.  Don’t worry, if you come to our trials, we promise
not to serve you stuffed big snakes.
Memories are precious . . . .
